Are you a 1:1 Crisis Para or a paraprofessional that works with children that exhibit challenging behaviors? In this one-day workshop, we will examine how learning about the brain can help us better understand our students’ behavior and how we can become more effective at both preventing and de-escalating challenging behaviors at school. We will cover data collection to support FBA/BIP development; executive functioning; trauma and its effects on learning and behavior; calming exercises you can teach your students; and self-care to help relieve your own stress.
This workshop can be a great follow-up to Paraprofessionals: Crucial Members of the Classroom Team or a standalone day.
This series offers special education and related service providers the opportunity to carefully assess the needs of the students on their caseload through the lens of Specially Designed Instruction (SDI) and adult transdisciplinary collaboration. Using documents from the NYC DOE as starting points on co-teaching/co-planning, Specially Designed Instruction, the Continuum of Services and the Standard Operating Procedures manual, we will coach SETSS providers to sharply refine their development of students’ IEPs and document learner progress and outcomes.
A second focus of the work with SETSS providers is to coach them in adult collaborative skills, including: facilitating a planning/problem-solving meeting; understanding and resolving conflict; focusing problem-solving on student-centered assets-based analysis with keen attention to how the student’s disability affects their learning, engagement, and participation.
A third focus of the work with SETSS providers is to prepare them to balance student learning needs due to disability, including: executive functioning; access to print literacies; and behavioral/emotional/social supports.
Each team will meet five times at Teachers College, Columbia University.
The middle and high school team will meet on 1/28, 3/3, 4/1, 5/1, 5/2, and 5/29
